An issue that most people deal with is control. Control is all about self – self centered, self willed and self wanting. Having or being in control is considered prideful.
A person who is in control wants and even desires to be in control and always have to call the shots. Being great is never achieved by being in controlled. It is achieved by allowing others to help you. Jesus said to Peter in Luke 5:1-10, let down your nets to catch the fish. Peter turned to Jesus and told him that we have been fishing all night and we did not catch anything. In other words, Peter said, “ I got this Jesus. I am an expert fisherman and you are a carpenter.” In essence, as an expert fisherman, he knew his craft. He knew the type of conditions of when the fish were going to bite.
Peter eventually went deeper into the sea and let down his nets. In John 21, Jesus told him exactly where to let down his – the right hand side of the boat. When he did, the fish came into the net and his team of expert fisherman had trouble pulling the fish into the boat.
The theme of the story was Peter thought he was in control. Peter recognized his fault and immediately asked for forgiveness from Jesus. God does not desire us to be in control. Our position is to ask him as outline in Matthew 7:7 – Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. He has given us all the answers so we can let our nets down. John 16:13 declares when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. I am beginning to understand that true successful people don’t have the spirit of control. They just let down their nets as God have instructed.
