Every couple must understand the foundation of marriage and discover the manual (Bible) that was provided for the union of marriage. This manual was created by God, the maker and creator of the universe. It has all of the necessary components needed to live out a successful marriage. Now, this is not to say that your union will not encounter issues and potential setbacks, but for every issue, the manual will provide you with a solution. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 describes the authenticity of the scriptures and its purpose for our lives. 1 Corinthians 11:1-3 and Colossians 3:16-19 help each married couple understand that wisdom, teaching, and admonishing one another is critical in a relationship.
1 Corinthians 11:1-3 – Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you. But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
Colossians 3:16-19 – Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
As couples begin to establish a foundation for their marriage, it is important to reference the two foundations that are illustrated in the Word of God,
Matthew 7:24-27: Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And everyone that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
“Sand” – temporal things, or defined as material possessions. A marriage that is built on “sand” cannot resist the storms of life that each couple may encounter. Sand is a symbol of material things in life.
“Rock” – the symbol of the Word of God and His principles and precepts. The Word of God provides each individual with guidance and directions to accomplish life. Every marriage must build a foundation that will ensure the success for their life together. The Word of God provides you with the inner strength to resist all storms of life and forces that will come to challenge your union. Each couple must understand that no matter what foundation their marriage is built upon, adversities will come and you must have a plan to resolve each issue.
