Giving is one of the greatest opportunities of stewardship. Acts 20:35 tells us, “It is more blessed to give than to receive”. This scripture shows us that the ultimate happiness is giving to others. God does not require you to give what you don’t have; He requires you to give what you have. God’s principle of giving is for a greater purpose.
There are two purposes for giving. The first is an earthly purpose as discussed in Acts 20:35. You and I are supposed to help the sick, the orphans, the poor, and the widows. Our responsibility is to sow into the kingdom of God to ensure all of their physical and spiritual needs are met. This is the true kingdom of God regardless of religion, nationality, and economic or racial status. James 1:27 says, “Pure religionand undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and the widows in their affliction…”
The second purpose of giving is eternal. Matthew 6: 19–21 says, “Lay not up for yourself treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourself treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Continue to give to the poor, the needy, and the sick and to God’s kingdom. While doing so, treasures in heaven will be laid up for you.
